Biomed Innovation Night

CHI, together with partners BayBio and PricewaterhouseCoopers, will host the first ever BioMed Innovation Night at the Tsakopoulos Library Galleria at 828 I Street in Sacramento the evening of Tuesday, Feb, 1, 2011. State legislators, government officials and their staffs will be our honored guests at the event offering excellent opportunities for informal conversation and high-level networking.

At the reception, industry and research and education partners will show interactive displays of their biomedical innovations, allowing legislators and their staffs the chance to touch, feel and see the treatments and technologies being developed here and saving lives in California. The reception will be followed by a dinner featuring keynote speaker, Dr. Francine Kaufman, author of Diabesity: The Obesity-Diabetes Epidemic That Threatens America–And What We Must Do to Stop It, who will share her experiences on the front lines of the battle with diabetes and obesity among our youth.
At this inaugural event, we will unveil the CHI/BayBio/PricewaterhouseCoopers 2011 California Biomedical Industry Report. The annual report illustrates the important roles medical and biomedical research, development, and manufacturing play in California’s economy and ultimately in the nation’s health. The report will provide an overview of employment trends, wages, product development pipeline, opportunities and risks for the industry in California, home to the largest concentration of biomedical companies in the world.

Experts now predict that more than one-third of American children born in 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime. Dr. Kaufman, one of the world’s leading authorities on the link between obesity and diabetes, takes audiences to the front lines of the fight against this preventable but deadly disease. Using vivid patient stories to illustrate her points, she offers a compelling medical insight and practical treatment strategies for dealing with this public health threat. Detailing tools for change at every level – from families to school systems to government – and discussing innovative programs that are already making a difference, Dr. Kaufman offers a convincing action plan for winning this battle.
