CLSA’s June Monthly Speaker Series with the Asian Pacific Islander Caucus
June 20, 2015
On June 17, CLSA members had the opportunity to meet with the Asian Pacific Islander Caucus to discuss access to quality healthcare issues, the value of medical innovation, and avenues to create employment opportunities for college graduates.
Caucus participants included API Caucus Chair Das Assemblymember Williams (D—Santa Barbara), Health Committee Chairman Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D—Alameda), Assemblymember Ed Chau (D—Arcadia), Assemblymember David Chiu (D – San Francisco) and Assemblymember Kansan Chu (D—San Jose), all of whom shared the Caucus’ priorities to ensure equal access to healthcare education, social services, and other government services.
CLSA members had an in-depth discussion about regulatory actions and tax codes that would hinder the growth of the state’s life sciences sector. Members of the API Caucus recognize the importance of this industry, the number of jobs it creates, and the value of treatments in saving, extending and improving lives. The API Caucus expressed its interest working with CLSA members to maintain research and development in California and exploring incentives that would help the life sciences sector to thrive.
Our next Monthly Speaker Series will feature Assemblymember Jimmy Gomez (D—Los Angeles) and some of his Assembly colleagues. As Chair of the Finance Committee for the Special Session on healthcare, Gomez has an important role in shaping the policies that will be considered by his colleagues. He’ll be sharing his perspective not only on the Special Session, but also on Caucus priorities for the remainder of the legislative session. This event will be held on July 15 at 12:00 p.m. in the CMTA Office (1115 11th Street, Sacramento, CA). Please contact Christina Hwee, CLSA’s state government affairs associate chwee@CALifeSciences.org or 916-233-3497) for more information or to RSVP for this event.
