Organization Description
CSU Long Beach is a large urban comprehensive university offering a broad range of baccalaureate and graduate degrees spanning the liberal arts and sciences, and many applied and professional fields. In 1999-2000, more than 30,000 students were enrolled at CSULB, including 2,900 graduate students. The University has 1,600 faculty supported by 1,150 full-time and part-time staff. The 322-acre campus houses seven Colleges: Education, Business Administration, Arts, Engineering, Liberal Arts, Health and Human Services, and Natural Science and Mathematics. The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics comprises the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Geological Sciences, Mathematics, Physics & Astronomy, and Science Education (http://www.cnsm.csulb.edu). The College has 120 full-time faculty, 50 support staff, and 1,800 student majors. The College distinguishes itself through its emphasis on integrating research and education and through its active role in the Long Beach K16 Education Partnership. We are committed to undergraduate research and to providing a student-centered environment. The quality of College programs has been recognized by recent grants from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, The Camillle and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, The W.M. Keck Foundation, Research Corporation, as well as by numerous awards from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. Construction of a new 80,000 sq. ft. science building will begin in Fall, 2000. The CSULB College of Health and Human Services is committed to providing excellence in the educational training of persons in health and human services professions. The College's eleven departments, four programs and five centers offer health sciences majors including nursing, occupational and physical therapy, gerontology, healthcare administration, and master's of public health.
