2016 JumpStart Grant Opens this June at BIO

CLSA is pleased to launch the second annual JumpStart Grant on Thursday June 9 at the California Pavilion at BIO 2016.  The JumpStart Grant, awarded by PharmaDirections, provides the winning company with a comprehensive development plan that includes a strategic plan, Gant chart and itemized budget that can be used to raise funds and provide efficient execution (an estimated value of $25,000). Applicant companies should be privately-held therapeutic (small or large molecule biologics), combination drug/device, and/or diagnostic companies, must be located in California, and be a member of CLSA and/or Biocom.

Thomas Hitchcock, Ph.D., CEO of Xycrobe Therapeutics, a La Jolla-based CLSA Fellow member company that is leveraging data from microbiome research to develop novel therapies, was the winner of the 2015 grant. Upon winning the JumpStart grant last November, Hitchcock engaged in extensive discussions with Michelle Higgin, Program Director at PharmaDirections, who also ended up serving as a regulatory expert for Xycrobe.  While their full report is nearing completion, Xycrobe has already received budgets and timelines for a couple of their in-development products, in both the cosmetic and therapeutic space. “The JumpStart grant has brought tremendous value to Xycrobe in a relatively short period of time and without significant effort on our part,” indicated Hitchcock. “The PharmaDirections team has been great to work with and was flexible when we pivoted to explore the cosmetic development path.  The assistance we have already received has been very useful for our pitches to VCs and for collaboration with partners.” Dr. Hitchcock will be on hand at the June 9th launch at the CA Pavilion.

Applications for the 2016 JumpStart grant will open in June, with the winning company announced in November.  For more information on the 2016 JumpStart grant, please visit or contact Cathi Rogers, Director of Business Development at PharmaDirections at
