Head of West Coast Business Development & Licensing, Merck
Alex Szidon, PhD, is the head of Merck’s West Coast business development and licensing group headquartered in San Francisco, California. Alex’s group is responsible for Merck’s business development interactions with all California companies as well as companies based in Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alberta. In this role, Alex identifies business opportunities across Merck therapeutic areas and interacts with Merck’s senior leadership across Merck’s product portfolio as well as executive committee level leadership involved in deal development, review, and execution. Alex represents Merck through other board of director memberships, industry panels at BIO, BIOinvestor, BIOpartnering (to name a few), and interactions with government officials in the United States and Canada. Alex received his PhD in Biochemistry and Cell Biology from University of California, San Francisco and remains active with the university.
Working to expand its presence in California, Merck is currently opening a new, 300,000 sf. facility in South San Francisco while looking for additional growth opportunities throughout the state. His position in Merck’s business development, brings a unique perspective in that he works for one of the largest biopharmaceutical companies in the United State but spends the majority of his time interacting with smaller California and West Coast based biotechnology companies that represent various stages of medical product development, giving insight on emerging technologies, treatment modalities, diagnostics and digital health innovations and understands the specific challenges each class of innovators face regarding growth, partnering and adoption by the healthcare system.
