CLSA Bolsters Support for Legislation to Ensure Access to Breakthrough Medical Device Products

June 20, 2016

On April 20, Representatives Tony Cárdenas (D-Van Nuys), Charles Boustany (R-La.), Richard Neal (D-Mass.) and Gus Bilirakis (R-Fla.) introduced H.R. 5009, the Ensuring Patient Access to Critical Breakthrough Products Act, legislation to streamline Medicare coverage for technologies approved through the FDA’s medical device expedited review process. CLSA strongly supports this bill to modernize Medicare coverage and payment policies, ultimately improving more timely patient access to life-saving and –sustaining innovative, breakthrough technologies.

CLSA’s leadership efforts to highlight the importance of such reforms for California’s innovative medical technology sector, and working in collaboration with AdvaMed and our member device companies, have been successful on a number of fronts, including in securing California Rep. Cárdenas as an original co-author of the legislation.

Most recently, CLSA also initiated and led a multi-state life sciences association letter of endorsement for H.R. 5009. Identical versions of the multi-state letter, signed by 25 state and regional associations, were sent to the House and Senate sponsors of the legislation. A copy of the multi-state endorsement letter is available here. CLSA’s endorsement letter of the legislation is available here. Click here to view CLSA’s press release lauding the legislation.
