U.S. Senate HELP Committee
428 Senate Dirksen Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510
Dear Chairman Alexander:
On behalf of the California Life Sciences Association (CLSA), thank you for the opportunity to submit comments to the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions in response to Chairman Alexander’s White Paper entitled, “Preparing for the Next Pandemic”. CLSA represents California’s life sciences innovators, including medical device, diagnostic, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, research universities, private, non-profit institutes, and venture capital firms employing over 300,000 Californians. Many of our members have been working around the clock to develop diagnostics, devices, treatments, and vaccines to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, we appreciate the extensive work that went into the development of this White Paper, and recommend the following for your consideration as you craft legislation to help our country prepare for the next pandemic: 1) Improve and enhance the Strategic National Stockpile, 2) Support and accelerate the research and development of novel antibiotics to combat antimicrobial resistance, and 3) Establish a public education campaign on pandemic preparedness.
