On Oct. 22, CLSA, in partnership with Allergan and Edwards Lifesciences, hosted a facility tour and roundtable discussion with the state legislators, legislative staff, Orange County Medical Association, and other key stakeholders to educate policymakers and stakeholders on the value of life sciences innovation in Orange County. Nearly forty attendees joined the roundtable discussion which included nine state legislators from both sides of the aisle. Among the legislators who attended, were: Assemblymember Cottie Petrie-Norris, Marie Waldron, Steven Choi, Jim Cooper, Tyler Diep, Bill Brough, Senator Tom Umberg, John Moorlach, and Ling Ling Chang.

The Orange County roundtable was designed to create an open dialogue conversation among the policymakers, legislative staff, biotechnology executives, provider community, state government affairs representatives, and other stakeholders to discuss critical issues important to California’s biomedical R&D community, including the ecosystem for life sciences investment, innovation and job creation in our state, and the opportunities and challenges facing the life sciences sector and healthcare in general.

Dr. Sesha Neervannan, Senior Vice President of Global Pharmaceutical Development and Jag Dosanjh, Senior Vice President of Specialty Therapeutics for Allergan kicked off the discussion by sharing the company’s historic achievements and upcoming products for patients around the world. The discussion also included topics such as value-based payment models, tax incentives, employment opportunities in the state of California, etc. The attendees toured the Allergan facility after the discussion where facility managers educated them on the different stages of drug development and current drugs/products in the pipeline.

This event also included a tour of the Edwards Lifesciences in Orange County facility guided by the company’s Corporate Vice President and CLSA board member Dirksen Lehman. Edwards, a state of art medical device facility headquartered in California, specializes in heart valves and hemodynamic monitoring. Lehman started the tour with a brief history of Edwards Lifesciences and showcasing its market-leading heart valve therapies, and critical care and vascular technologies. The attendees were presented with an opportunity to touch and feel the tissue currently being used to manufacture the heart valves and other products.

CLSA would like to thank our member companies Allergan and Edwards Lifesciences for providing an opportunity to highlight the innovation happening in California. We would welcome similar opportunities in the future to host tours and roundtable discussions.
