CLSA was a proud sponsor and participant of the 6th Annual Rally for Medical Research & National Day of Action on Sept. 13-14, 2018. This annual event brings together more than 300 organizations to call on our nation’s policymakers to make funding for National Institutes of Health (NIH) a national priority and raise awareness about the importance of continued investment in medical research that leads to “more progress, more hope and more lives saved.”
This year, CLSA’s Washington, DC-based Federal Government Relations team met with members of the California congressional delegation to thank them for their support of NIH in the past and encourage them to ensure increased funding for NIH in fiscal year 2019. During the Rally, on Sept. 14, the House and Senate passed a “minibus” spending bill including $39.1 billion for NIH in FY19, a $2 billion increase over FY18 levels. This amount is consistent with the levels CLSA requested earlier in the year and we are pleased by this outcome. The NIH is the lifeblood of basic research, fostering the next generation of medical breakthroughs. The continued vibrancy of the California and U.S. biomedical industry relies upon continued advances and progress in science that are fueled and driven by the NIH and other federally-funded science research.
