CLSA Endorses Legislation to Protect and Strengthen Patent Rights of Life Sciences Industry

CLSA is proud to endorse bipartisan, bicameral legislation introduced in the Senate by Senators Chris Coons (D-Del.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), and Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), and in the House by Representatives Steve Stivers (R-Ohio) and Bill Foster (D-Ill.) to curb abusive patent litigation practices while maintaining and strengthening important patent-holder rights and protections.

CLSA is strongly supportive of the STRONGER (Support Technology & Research for Our Nation’s Growth and Economic Resilience) Patents Act (S.1390 & H.R. 5340) which will restore the original intent of the American Invents Act (AIA), passed by Congress in 2011, in creating Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) proceedings which would allow a faster, cheaper alternative to litigation for challenging weak patents, without unfairly disadvantaging inventors and patent owners.

We are working with our national trade association partners to engage and educate members of the California delegation, secure additional cosponsors of the bills, and advocate for swift action on this legislation this year. Our letter of endorsement of the Senate bill is available here, and our letter of endorsement of the House bill is available here.
