Course on Next Generation Sequencing Technology
UC Santa Cruz Silicon Valley Extension
8:30am - 5:00pm
A four day course providing a deep dive into next generation sequencing.
Day 1: Review of genomics, genetic nomenclature and cell biology. Capsule history of sequencing. Quiz.
Day 2: Sequencing technologies. Sanger, Single molecule (Oxford Nanopore, PacBio, Genia), Ensemble (Illumina, Ion Torrent, Qiagen), and Emerging technologies are covered in detail. Starting from Library prep to Sequencing. Quiz.
Day 3: Data analysis - 1', 2' and 3' analysis. Different approaches to sequence DNA (targeted to whole genome, low depth to high depth). Different approaches to sequence methylated DNA, RNA (coding and non-coding), and nucleic acid protein complexes. Impact of the data generated on basic understanding of genomics. Quiz.
Day 4. Clinical applications of NGS. From screening of prospective parents, IVF, prenatal, neonatal, mendelian disorders, early detection and disease monitoring for cancer, liquid biopsy, infectious diseases. Final Quiz.
