Racial & Social Equity Initiative

We have all joined the life sciences industry, in this great and diverse state of California, because we believe this to be true: Doing the right thing is good business.  Our purpose is to enhance and save lives for all people around the world.  This inspires us every day.

To that end, we believe our leadership, our teams, our innovations, and our investments must reflect the diverse populations we are meant to serve.  Events this year challenged us to critically reflect on whether we are truly delivering on our values of full representation for all people; equity irrespective of race, color, national origin, physical ability, gender, sexual orientation, age or socio-economic status.  Despite our good intentions and efforts to date, we are falling short in living up to and making meaningful progress on our values, whether it is because of unconscious biases, institutional racism, ineffective programs or indifference.  Regardless of the reasons, we must be better.

To be better means we need to approach the problems holistically.  We need to increase STEM opportunities for under-represented student populations, hire, develop, and advance under-represented talent populations, invest in diverse entrepreneurs and board members, and provide underserved communities with equitable access to and coverage for care.

California Life Sciences Association and Institute have created the Racial & Social Equity Initiative as the first step in a unified effort to be better, to do more for the under-served and under-represented, with an initial focus on the most critical need of inequality for Black, LatinX, Native American, and Pacific Islander populations in California.
