New Legislator Spotlight: State Senator Andreas Borgeas (R-Fresno)
Feb. 8, 2019
In each issue of our CLSA Bulletin, we will highlight a member of California’s ten-member “freshman class” in the California State Senate.
On behalf of our membership and California’s statewide life sciences community – a sector which employs over 311,000 Californians – California Life Sciences Association (CLSA) welcomes State Senator Andreas Borgeas (R-Fresno). We look forward to working with Senator Borgeas and his team to advance policies that improve patient health and bring positive change for California patients and their families.
Andreas Borgeas is a family man and educator, and as State Senator proudly represents California’s 8th Senate District. After earning his law degree from Georgetown University, Andreas served as a judicial law clerk for Federal Judge Oliver Wanger of the Eastern District in Fresno and then practiced international law at Luce Forward.
Andreas earned his PhD in international affairs from Panteion University and has worked overseas in numerous academic and professional capacities. He has been a professor for over a decade in the fields of international law and security affairs at the San Joaquin College of Law in Clovis and the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey. Andreas began public service as a Fresno City Councilman in 2009, and then in 2013 as a member of the Fresno County Board of Supervisors before being elected in 2018 to the California State Senate.
While originally from Phoenix, Arizona, Andreas is a proud Fresnan. Andreas and his wife Anna, whom he met at a Starbucks in Fresno, are the proud parents of two young boys. The Borgeas family is also very involved in the local Greek and Armenian communities.
Andreas is Vice-Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and serves on the following committees: Governmental Organization; Insurance; Natural Resources and Water; and Joint Legislative Audit. The eighth Senate District encompasses all or portions of the following Central Valley, foothills, and mountain counties: Amador, Calaveras, Fresno, Inyo, Madera, Mariposa, Mono, Sacramento, Stanislaus, Tulare, and Tuolumne.
