California Life Sciences Association (CLSA) Hosts Southern California Digital Health Symposium with OCTANe, Accenture, Becton Dickinson and Covington & Burling
On Oct. 12, I had the pleasure of chairing CLSA’s first annual Southern California Digital Health Symposium at the Ritz Carlton in Laguna Niguel. Hosted in conjunction with the BioNetwork Partnering Conference, our Symposium brought more than 80 senior executives together to hear presentations from Steve Weinswig of Accenture on design thinking in digital health, a panel discussion between Bill Carpou at OCTANe, Nick Moran of Axis Research & Technologies and Robert Brown of Meridiun about upcoming trends, and a fireside chat between Jason Scharf of Becton Dickenson and Wade Ackerman, CLSA board member and partner at Covington & Burling, regarding FDA approval policy and future actions related to digital health. CLSA is currently planning the focus of our 2019 Digital Health Initiative; if you would like more information, please contact us.

CLSA To Launch 2019 California Life Sciences Industry Report, Nov. 14
On Nov. 14, CLSA and PwC will unveil the 2019 California Life Sciences Industry Report. The new report will provide a snapshot of California’s life sciences community, and how the world’s largest life sciences cluster remains a global hub for innovation, creating high-wage jobs, bringing new therapies and technologies to patients, and attracting significant investment from venture capitalists, the NIH and more. For over 20 years, this annual report has been used by lawmakers, legislative staff, business leaders, educators, media outlets, developers and others to make key decisions and learn more about the life sciences sector in California.

Join us on Nov. 14 at 11 am PT for a launch webinar to get a firsthand look at the new report at the data driving our world-leading ecosystem.

CLSA Offers Federal Legislative Outlook for the Rest of 2018
While the outcome of the elections next week will determine whether the Democrats win a majority in either the House or the Senate, or if the Republicans maintain control of one or both chambers in the 116th Congress, both the House and Senate will return to Washington, D.C. in late November and early December (approximately 16-20 legislative days) to finish legislative work prior to the end of the year and the 115th Congress.

Several legislative priorities of importance to the life sciences sector are likely to be addressed during this time frame: funding the federal government in fiscal year 2019, renewing our nation’s biodefense and pandemic preparedness enterprise, and (hopefully) repealing the medical device excise tax. CLSI Presents Workforce Trends Data at Briefing with Assemblymember Kevin Mullin
On October 18, Lori Lindburg, President & CEO of California Life Sciences Institute, presented key findings from the 2018 California Workforce Trends Report at a legislative briefing at Amgen in South San Francisco.  Coordinated by the California Biotechnology Foundation, and kicked off by Assembly Speaker pro Tem Kevin Mullin, the “Biotech 101” panel briefed CA legislative staff on the important role of California’s life sciences industry.

CLSI and CSweetener Host Panel on Executive Mentoring for Women
In other Institute news, CLSI hosted a panel and networking reception on Advancing Your Career Through Mentoring, part of CLSI’s Women Leading Life Sciences Initiative. The panel was cohosted by CSweetener, which connects female leaders on the path to – and already in – the healthcare C-Suite with male and female industry leaders and innovators.
