Organization Description

Founded in 1857, San José State University (SJSU) was the first public institution of higher education on the West Coast. From its beginnings as a normal school to train teachers for the developing frontier, SJSU has matured into a master’s university offering more than 130 bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Located on 154 acres in center city San José, SJSU’s location in the heart of Silicon Valley makes it an exceptionally rewarding learning environment for students to explore their talents and hone their professional skills.Through its eight colleges (Applied Science & Arts, Business, Education, Engineering, Humanities & The Arts, Science, Social Sciences, Social Work) the University offers: 71 bachelor’s degrees with 45 concentrations, and 64 master’s degrees with 28 concentrations. In 1999-2000, 26,937 students were enrolled at SJSU, including 5,520 graduate students. SJSU has 1,695 faculty members. The College of Science (CoS) transforms its majors into qualified science professionals for a global and regional Silicon Valley work force, and prepares them for advanced (graduate) training and life-long learning. Core science education is provided for engineers, health care professionals, K-12 teachers, and other technical fields, as well as basic mathematics and science skills to students in non-science majors.
